What is The Carbon Platform?

The Carbon Platform is an online community and resource that helps individuals take meaningful actions to reduce their Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. We sell products and services that have been independently validated to have lower-than-industry-average GHG emissions, and help our customers track the impact of their purchases over time.

Why does The Carbon Platform focus so strongly on products/services that reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions?

GHG emissions provide unique insights into a broad cross-section of topics that allow individuals, societies and companies to improve their well-being.
Accurately measuring and reducing GHG emissions is currently complex, and can require rework as new information becomes available. Philosophically, we are convinced that by focusing on GHG emissions we will have the best chance of driving meaningful impact around this critical topic.

Does shopping on The Carbon Platform really help reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions?

It is our strong conviction that individual actions, no matter how small, add up and are required to reduce GHG emissions. The Carbon Platform is designed for individuals and companies that want an integrated solution to achieve immediate impact by supporting companies that are focused on offering products/services with offer lower-than-industry-average GHG emissions. ACTIONS

What does The Carbon Platform do to measure and reduce its own GHG emissions?

Our approach is to quantitatively measure our own GHG emissions wherever possible (and research/ develop new solutions to make these measurements, where needed), and then to identify opportunities to reduce our emissions.
We work with independent companies to challenge our measurement and reduction methodologies and ensure we are working within appropriate industry frameworks (such as the GHG Protocol https://ghgprotocol.org).

SOURCING

What is your overall sourcing philosophy?

We look for products and services that help reduce GHG emissions in one of four ways:

  • By reducing the consumption of an existing good or service
  • By reducing the emissions associated with an existing good or service
  • By offering a lower-GHG option to achieve a similar outcome
  • By providing pragmatic data or information to assist individuals or companies to act to reduce their GHG emissions

SELECTION

How do you select brands/ products?

We start by identifying products and services that are relevant to our customers' everyday lifestyles. In other words, we prioritize products or services that are likely to substitute for those already being purchased.
When we find relevant products and services, we review critically how these help reduce GHG emissions in a way that can be verified and traced.
We are particularly excited when we find products and brands that are challenging established paradigms in a way that is aligned with achieving Net Zero emissions in a timely manner.

VALIDATION

How do you verify the products on your marketplace? What steps does The Carbon Platform take to limit “greenwashing?”

We use four broad criteria.

First, transparency into GHG emissions. Second, a credible improvement plan to reduce emissions over time, including a willingness to tackle critical emissions areas. Third, the availability of 3rd-party corroboration. Fourth, a mindset commensurate with transitioning to a Net Zero economy.

Where we have concerns, we dig deeper, but our bias is to support individuals and companies that are working and taking steps to help reduce GHG emissions.

If new information becomes available that suggests a product or service is not aligned with our goals - and is unlikely to become aligned with our goals relatively quickly - then we discontinue this offering.

CARBON OFFSETS

POSITIONS

What is The Carbon Platform's position on carbon offsets?

A carbon offset is a claim to reduce GHG emissions in the atmosphere in direct proportion to the amount emitted by the creation, distribution, use or recycling of a product or service. For example, if the total CO₂ emissions associated with a product is 1 kg over its lifecycle, and 1 kg of CO₂ is actively (and permanently) removed from the atmosphere "on behalf" of the product, then one could argue that the product's CO₂ emissions have been offset.
With this context, our guiding philosophy is:

  • We don't give credit to offsets that either would have (or even should have) been undertaken anyway
  • As an approximate corollary, we favor offsets where it can be shown that they would NOT have been undertaken without an individual or company's direct involvement
  • We take a "show-me-don't-tell-me" approach to offsets: pointing to something tangible is quite important for us
  • We expect offsets to be tied to discrete activities and emissions associated with producing a product or service (this links the cost of an offset to an action and aligns economic incentives to reduce GHG emissions)
  • We expect offsets to reduce atmospheric GHG emissions in the same timeframe as the emissions occur
  • We will look for offset use to decrease over time as technologies associated with lower-GHG emissions mature and their costs decrease
  • We disfavor offset use to prolong the use of technologies that are not aligned with achieving Net Zero emissions in a timely manner

HOW DO YOU SHIP?

SHIPPING

How are products shipped to me?

Whenever possible, items purchased from The Carbon Platform are shipped directly from the manufacturer to you to reduce redundant warehousing, transportation, packaging, and other logistics emissions. This helps us keep our costs down and reduce the distance items travel before they reach you.
Note: because of this some orders may arrive in more than one shipment.
Our goal is to work with the manufacturers to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to reduce emissions due to shipping and packaging. Unavoidable emissions are offset.

What shipping carriers do you use?

Depending on the item, the route, the package weight, and insurance requirements, different carriers (such as DHL, FedEx, UPS or USPS) may be used.

ORDER PROCESSING

How are products shipped to me?

Once an order has been placed, you will receive an email confirmation to the address you provided during the check-out process.

ORDER TRACKING & DELIVERY TIME

How can I track my order?

When your order is shipped a tracking number is generated and sent to the email address you provided during the check-out process.

How long does it take to ship my order?

We attempt to ship your orders as quickly as possible, recognizing that weekends and holidays can impact the turnaround time.
Normally, we expect products to ship within 2-3 days after an order has been received. Delivery within the continental US typically requires 3-5 business days.
If we have advanced notice that a product will take longer-than-usual to ship we will provide this information on the product page.

SHIPPING COST

How much does shipping cost? Do you offer free shipping?

We offer free shipping on orders that total $80.00 or more (before tax), provided they are to be delivered within the continental US and have an average weight and size. For orders below $80.00 we charge a weight-based shipping fee. We provide shipping rates on a case-by-case basis for heavy and large items, as well as those to be shipped outside of the continental US.

SHIPPING INSURANCE

How can I insure my order against theft?

We partner with ShipInsure to protect against lost, stolen or damaged packages. When checking out, please strongly consider opting in to shipping insurance. Claims must be filed within 15 days of the tracking delivery date or estimated delivery date. When you file a claim, the ShipInsure team will review it, and they will get back to you within 24 hours.

Note: If you opt out of shipping insurance, The Carbon Platform is unable to cover the cost to replace packages that have been stolen or mis-delivered.

DELIVERY FAILURE

What should I do if my tracking number indicates my order has been delivered, but I have not received my order?

First, please check to see that the package was not delivered to an unusual spot, or to a neighbor trying to be helpful. Also, note that occasionally information about mis-delivered packages can be found on neighborhood social networking services.

Second, if you cannot find your package, and you have purchased shipping insurance through our provider, ShipInsure, then please refer to the email that ShipInsure sent to obtain your ShipInsure ID Number (starts with SI). Using this number, and the email address you used to buy from The Carbon Platform, you can go to the ShipInsure website here and enter the requested information, including your preferred resolution. The ShipInsure team will review your claim and get back to you within 24 hours.

Note: claims must be submitted within 15 days of the tracking delivery date or estimated delivery date. Further information can be found here.

If you elected not to purchase shipping insurance please contact us at shipping@thecarbonplatform with your order number and shipping address and we will see if we can help. However, we stress that packages need to be insured if we are to resend or refund an order in the event of loss or theft.

INTERNATIONAL ORDERS

Does The Carbon Platform ship outside of the United States?

To minimize our GHG footprint, we only ship to countries where we operate.
If you see a product you like and live outside of the United States, please send us an email to orders@thecarbonplatform.com and we will see if we can find a climate-friendly solution for you.

ORDER UPDATES AND CANCELLATIONS

How long do I have to update or cancel an order?

Please contact us at orders@thecarbonplatform.com as soon as possible and we will see if we can update or cancel an order before it is shipped. Including "Urgent update" in the subject line will help us out!
If the order has already been processed or shipped, then you will need to initiate a return or exchange within 30 days of placing the order.
It goes without saying (but we will do so anyway): please consider the GHG footprint associated with returning an order or item - "measure twice, cut once".
We ask customers to cover the cost of reshipping orders that are returned to us because they could not be delivered.

SHIPPING SUSTAINABLY

How sustainable is your shipping?

We make every attempt to ensure that emissions associated with shipping are minimized via appropriate selection of packaging, and shipping carriers. We attempt to offset emissions due to shipping that are unavoidable.
